Currimundi, QLD – In Collaboration with TONIC Architecture + Design & 9Life Renovate or Rebuild

Renovate: 7.3 Stars | Rebuild: 7.9 Stars

In this standout project located in coastal Currimundi, Queensland, SUHO was engaged by TONIC Architecture + Design to provide expert sustainability advice and design optimisation for both renovation and rebuild pathways. With the home featured as part of the Renovate or Rebuild series, it offered a prime opportunity to demonstrate the real-world impact of early passive design decisions.

From the outset, SUHO's involvement focused on maximising the home's thermal performance through spatial zoning and orientation—key factors often overlooked in early design stages. By working closely with the architectural team during the concept phase, we were able to guide decisions that would influence not only the comfort and liveability of the home, but its compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC) and its overall energy performance.

Our Design Optimisation Approach

To ensure the best possible outcomes, we recommended a zone layout designed to harness natural solar gain and reduce unwanted heat loads:

  • Living areas were placed to the north, capturing winter sun and natural daylight to reduce reliance on artificial heating and lighting.
  • Sleeping zones were oriented to the east, taking advantage of the morning sun and remaining cooler in the evening—ideal for restful sleep.
  • Utility zones, such as bathrooms and laundry, were located to the south, where natural light and solar gain are less critical.
  • The garage was positioned to the west, acting as a buffer to afternoon heat and shielding the interior living spaces from excessive thermal load.

This clear zoning strategy resulted in a Rebuild concept that reached a remarkable 7.9-star NatHERS energy rating, with the Renovation option achieving a strong 7.3-star performance, well above the NCC 2019 minimum regulatory requirements.

The Outcome

The project not only met but exceeded energy efficiency expectations. The ratings speak for themselves, but just as important was the collaborative process that allowed energy performance to inform design, rather than being considered as an afterthought. The Currimundi home demonstrates that thoughtful, climate-responsive design can be achieved without sacrificing style or functionality.

Why Zoning and Orientation Matter

🛠️ Did you know?
The orientation and layout of your home can make a significant difference to its energy efficiency, year-round comfort, and long-term cost savings. Strategic zoning, placing rooms according to how and when they’re used in relation to the sun’s path, is one of the simplest, most effective ways to design for performance.

By integrating passive design principles early, we help clients and architects achieve more sustainable, resilient homes that perform exceptionally in Australia’s varied climates.
