What is Green Star ‘Interiors’?

Creating healthier, high-performing interiors with credible sustainability outcomes
Interior environments play a significant role in how buildings perform — not just environmentally, but for the people who occupy them every day. Green Star ‘Interiors’ is Australia’s leading sustainability rating tool for interior fitouts, providing independent certification that spaces are designed and delivered with health, efficiency and environmental responsibility at their core.
At SUHO, we support project teams through the Green Star Interiors process with clarity and confidence, helping translate sustainability ambition into practical, certifiable outcomes.

Understanding Green Star ‘Interiors’

Green Star ‘Interiors’ is a comprehensive sustainability assessment and certification framework developed by the Green Building Council of Australia. It evaluates interior fitout projects across key performance areas, including:
  • Materials and product selection
  • Energy and water efficiency
  • Indoor environmental quality (IEQ)
  • Occupant health, comfort and wellbeing
  • Waste minimisation and responsible construction practices

Unlike whole-building tools, Green Star Interiors focuses specifically on interior elements — ensuring that fitouts contribute positively to both environmental performance and the everyday experience of occupants.

Important Update: Transition to Green Star ‘Fitouts’ (2026)

Green Star ‘Interiors’ is currently transitioning to the next generation tool, Green Star ‘Fitouts’.
  • Green Star Interiors remains open for registration until 30 September 2026
  • From 1 October 2026, all new fitout projects must register under Green Star Fitouts
  • Projects already registered under Green Star Interiors may continue under their approved timelines
This transition reflects the ongoing evolution of sustainability benchmarks in Australia, with the new Fitouts tool expected to further strengthen outcomes around carbon, health and performance.

Why It Matters

Green Star Interiors provides a structured pathway for delivering fitouts that are not only compliant, but genuinely high-performing.
The framework helps project teams to:
  • Meet rigorous sustainability benchmarks
  • Reduce operational energy, water and material impacts
  • Improve comfort, productivity and wellbeing for occupants
  • Align projects with broader ESG and sustainability objectives
As expectations around workplace quality and environmental responsibility continue to evolve, certified interiors are increasingly seen as a benchmark for best practice.
